As an interior designer, I have worked on many bedroom projects. I understand the obstacles one faces while trying to furnish a space. On many occasions, we deal with uneven rooms, random windows, doors, dropped ceilings, and other challenges. It can be tricky to find a balance between comfort, functionality, and great esthetic.

There are many different ways to begin designing a bedroom. I usually start with a color scheme and style, that way I know what color and what type of furniture I’m looking for, which makes it easier to sieve through all the endless choices out there. The next step is assessing the size of the bed you need and if it will fit in your space. I find it useful when looking for a large item such as a bed to find the standard measurement of the bed you need and tape it out with masking tape on the floor. That will give you a rough idea of how the bed size will work in your bedroom. The height of the bed is also very important when choosing a bed. Low beds are better for younger people who don’t yet feel any pains or aches. The older crowd might lean more towards taller type beds. Besides the bed, you should account for other furniture in the space as well as the space necessary to move around the room comfortably. Let us not forget about the headboard, I tend to tape that out as well. That way you will get a better idea of the wall space you have left above in case you would want to add art above your bed.
